December 12, 2013
Nearly 45%
of exports of Ukraine’s military-industrial sector go to Asian countries,
Serhiy Hromov, Director General of the UkrOboronProm State Concern, told
DefenceWorld.
“Among the
main partners of Ukraine in terms of military-technical cooperation are India,
Iraq, China, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Russian Federation,” Hromov said, citing
as an example of such cooperation a contract to overhaul and modernize105
Antonov AN-32s that was signed with India. Worth US $400mn, this is the largest
contract in the history of Ukraine-India military-technical cooperation.
Hromov also
described cooperation with Ukrainian shipbuilding companies as “promising.”
“Our
companies are able to build ships of various types and purposes,” says Hromov.
“The manufacturing and technical capacities of sate-owned UkrOboronProm have
allowed Ukraine to modernize its navy and other fleets to the highest world
standards. The evidence of this is our state program to build a corvette ship
for Ukraine’s navy. Vessels of this class will have considerable export
potential. A number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Middle East and
South America have shown great interest in this kind of ships.”
He also
noted that UkrOboronProm would be presenting the production of Ukraine’s
military-industrial complex at Defexpo India 2014, the 7th
International Land, Naval and Internal Security Systems Exhibition, which takes
place February 6-9.
Over
January-October, 2013, UkrOboronProm increased its production and service
volumes by 35% or more than US $1bn compared to the same period last year, and
increased its net income to US $50mn.
UkrOboronProm
is expecting to expand military-industrial cooperation with China, specifically
in shipbuilding, aviation and the manufacture of precision
weapons.
