Ukrainians continue to buy more and more coffee every year
December 18, 2013
According
to the latest market research on coffee consumption in Ukraine, coffee
consumption has been growing steadily for the last decade among Ukrainians.
Over 2000-2010, the average annual rise in coffee consumption was 23%, almost
10 times faster than the world rate of 2.5% and making Ukraine one of the
record holders in coffee consumption, says Serafyma Rusynovych, director of
marketing research at Pro-Consulting.
Even the
global financial crisis did not have an impact on this trend on Ukraine’s
coffee market: at that time, it still showed a marginal increase of 0.7%. Over
2010-2011, the domestic average growth of coffee consumption jumped 20%. In
2012, it grew a further 28%, which adds up to 49,620 tonnes of coffee and
coffee substitutes.
Russian
coffee producers are among the main exporters of the drink to the Ukrainian
market, enjoying a 20% share by volume and more than 27% share by value. Other
major suppliers of coffee to Ukraine include Poland and Germany with 13.8% and
12.7% of the market by volume and 7.9% and 13.1% of the market by value.
Meanwhile, Ukraine import very little from Brazil, the world’s leader in this
market: 2.8% by volume and value.
Global
demand for coffee is growing thanks to strong growth in developing markets,
such as Ukraine. This trend makes Ukraine’s market attractive for producers and
suppliers as well as for those in the HoReCa business. Yet, no matter how high
the market grows in Ukraine, the country remains only fourth in Europe in terms
of cups of coffee Ukrainians drink. On average, they drink one cup of coffee a
day, while in some European countries people drink an average of as much as 3
cups a day.
