November 25, 2014
Jordan announced a tender for purchase of 100,000 tonnes of hard wheat in early November. According to the terms of the tender, the wheat is to be shipped to Jordan in April-May 2015.
Earlier, Jordan had canceled a similar tender due to the unattractive prices being offered.
Domestic consumption of wheat in Jordan remains stable, the Foreign Agricultural Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA) reports. According to the FAS, the Kingdom witnessed a slight increase in consumption of food wheat due to an influx of Syrian refugees in 2014. Total annual wheat consumption is expected to be 918,000 tonnes, of which 905,000 t will be for food purposes. The FAS forecasts that in 2015-2016 wheat consumption in Jordan will return to last year’s volumes - 915,000 tonnes.
Domestic consumption of grain in Jordan is totally secured by imports. This year, the Kingdom will import 852,000 t of wheat and 800,000 t of barley. In 2015-2016, wheat imports will rise to 915,000 t and barley to 850,000 t. The countries of the Black Sea Coast will remain the main suppliers of wheat and barley to Jordan.
A reduction in prices for the US corn has increased its competitiveness on the Jordanian market, which is still dominated by Argentina, Brazil and the countries of the Black Sea Coast. The alignment of forces on the corn market will remain unchanged in the next season.
