Iraq needs no middlemen to import Ukrainian farm products
June 4, 2015
Iraq is eager to import grain, flour, sunflower oil and poultry directly from Ukraine, according to participants at the Ukrainian-Iraqi business forum. The forum took place on June 4 at the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI) headquarters in Kyiv.
“There are Ukrainian products on the Iraq market, but they come there through third-party countries,” said a UCCI statement released after the forum. “We plan to establish direct contact between businesses of the two countries.”
The Iraqi participants of the forum called on Ukrainians to finish reviewing bilateral documents. Among such documents are a draft bilateral agreement on avoiding dual taxation that is ready for signing and a draft agreement on investments.
So far in 2015, Iraq has been a leading importer of Ukrainian chicken meat. Over January-April 2015, Ukraine’s poultry industry supplied meat worth a total of US $62.8mn to foreign markets, more than 23% of which was shipped to Iraq.
