US-Ukraine business forum focuses on Ukraine’s farm sector
July 15, 2015
A US-Ukraine business forum took place in Washington on July 13, 2015, where Ukraine presented the investment potential of its agro-industrial sector.
US businesses were offered attractive investment proposals for developing Ukraine’s farm sector and logistics. Among such proposals were the modernization of irrigation systems in Southern oblasts, expanding port logistics, leasing and so on.
Ukraine’s Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food Oleksiy Pavlenko said that these projects were of great importance to the country, especially for Mykolayiv Oblast, which is one of the leading regions for agricultural products and exports.
The Minister pointed out that the wear rate of Ukraine’s irrigation systems is estimated at 82%, and their reconstruction will make it possible to double or even triple harvests. This project, which is being jointly implemented with the World Bank, has already passed the technical stage. USAID is ready to provide expert assistance.
“At the stage of feasibility studies, the experts drew up a budget,” says Pavlenko. “International donors are ready to take part in this project. One of the conditions is unifying irrigation networks into a single system. So, we’re working on this issue because these networks are divided into state, municipal and private property, and some of them don’t even have an owner.”
