Ukraine becomes leading supplier of maize to China
July 22, 2015
In the first half of 2015, Ukraine became the largest exporter of maize to China, less than 3 years after it began exporting the grain to China. The two countries signed a supplying trade credit in 2012.
According to China’s customs import records, in May alone, nearly 95% of its more than 400,000 t of imported maize came from Ukraine. In total, Ukraine provides nearly 90% of China’s maize imports. In the first five months of 2015, China received more than 1.5mn t of maize.
China is keen to diversify its grain and oilseeds suppliers, according to Glavnoye, a Ukrainian news agency. Ukrainian exports to China have grown inversely to US exports, which had been China’s main maize supplier.
According to Glavnoye, strengthening relations between the countries should support Ukraine’s farm sector and satisfy China’s growing demand for grain and meat.
