Saudi Arabia remains Ukraine’s Major Barley Consumer
January 13, 2017
As of the first half of 2016/17 marketing year, Ukraine surpassed previous year’s same period barley exports totaling 3.9 million tons by 9.5 percent, as stated by Yaroslav Levytsky, ProAgro’s Agricultural Markets analyst.
He noted that, despite almost no change in major export directions, there was a certain shift, however, in export volumes.
“Saudi Arabia, for instance, remains the main consumer of Ukrainian grain, despite its share being decreased to 40.5 percent during the first five months of 2016/17 marketing year compared to 54.7 percent in the same period of the previous season. At the same time, China, which occupied the second position in Importers from Ukraine Rating in 2015/16 marketing year, has moved to the third position, with its share dropped from 18.7 to 7.5 percent. However, barley shipping to Libya – third largest consumer of Ukrainian barley – almost doubled, with its export share increased from 9.3 to 18.1 percent,” said the expert.
